Nothing shows a team’s urgency quite like firing good people, and the Cardinals sent a critical message to manager Mike Matheny and the players Friday afternoon by reassigning third base coach Chris Maloney and designating infielder Jhonny Peralta for assignment.
To correct their season, though, the Cardinals’ players must take ownership of this season and figure out a way to unify their clubhouse and end the fractious atmosphere that plagued them since last year.
Matheny must lead. He needs help because his current crop of coaches haven’t figured out a way to break through and fix the issues that are hurting this struggling team.
