Ortiz: Cards should be trade-deadline buyers

The pretenders have already started to unload. Contenders like the Cubs and Nationals are busy fortifying their rosters with a focus on deep playoff runs.

The Cubs and Nationals have the two best records in the majors, and the smart money is on one of those teams winning the National League pennant. Don’t discount the Cardinals, though.

If there was any doubt whether general manager John Mozeliak had a contender, Yadier Molina and Co. delivered a clear message in the final week before the non-waiver trade deadline.

By winning two of three against the Mets at Citi Field before taking the first two against the Marlins at Marlins Park, the Cardinals moved into sole possession of the second NL wild card Friday.
