Surrounded by Hall of Famers and Cardinals greats, Whitey Herzog scanned the room and smiled. One of the greatest storytellers in baseball history had a captive audience, sharing riveting tales after hilarious memories last Sunday night.
Hall of Famer Bob Gibson sat directly across the room, and Tony La Russa was nearby as well. Fellow Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith was not in attendance, but new Cardinals slugger Marcell Ozuna kept looking for him.
Ozuna may not have known much about the Cardinals’ rich history, but he is old enough to know that The Wizard made plenty of magic at Busch Stadium II.
