The Cardinals’ miserable and painful month of May ended with an ugly exclamation point Thursday, figuratively delivering another foul tip to their groin. Yet another prized player was put on the shelf when top pitching prospect Alex Reyes returned to the disabled list a day after making his highly anticipated 2018 debut.
You could hardly blame the Cardinals if they began to feel sorry for themselves during a treacherous month in which they placed 11 players on the disabled list and made 42 transactions with 23 players, including their All-Star leader Yadier Molina, their All-Star ace Carlos Martinez, their 2017 Rookie of the Year Paul DeJong, veteran leader Adam Wainwright, one of the top pitching prospects in baseball (Reyes) and their expensive free agent signing and expected closer, Greg Holland.
