Closer Seung Hwan Oh, called on for a five-out save, took care of the first leg of it Sunday night by pitching out of a bases loaded spot in the Chicago eighth inning, maintaining a 1-0 lead for the Cardinals and starter Carlos Martinez, who struck out 10 and walked no one in his first opening night start.
Martinez, after the Cardinals had a long at-bat in the seventh, gave up two hits to the first three Cubs hitters he faced in the eighth. Manager Mike Matheny summoned Oh, who then hit Kyle Schwarber with a 3-2 pitch as rain began to fall.
