No relief in sight as Rockies bruise Cardinals with eight-run eighth

Infielder Kolten Wong was the first of two Cardinals to leave the game due to injury. Reliever Mike Mayers followed him to the trainers’ room in the eighth when his velocity dipped. Trying to outrun a groundout in his first at-bat, Wong felt a sting run through his right hamstring. He bounced off the bag and into concern. The Cardinals diagnosed him with a mild strain, though the severity of the injury won’t reveal itself until further tests Sunday in Denver. Wong walked out of Coors Field late Saturday frustrated, irritated … and concerned.

While stumping and styling for a Gold Glove Award at second base, Wong has also become, quietly, steadily, one of the team’s sources of pressure on offense.
