JUPITER, Fla. • With little ceremony and no regret, Cardinals hitter Jose Martinez handed over his black Wilson A2000 first baseman's glove to coach Stubby Clapp on Friday morning. As Clapp walked away, Martinez gave a dismissive wave to the glove.
As the Cardinals near their first official full-squad workout, most of the position players are already in camp, and they have split along usual lines for workouts: infielders hitting together, moving together; outfielders hitting together, moving together.
Martinez is decidedly an outfielder. He worked with coach Willie McGee on drills Friday morning, and he hit in the same group as Marcell Ozuna, Harrison Bader and Dexter Fowler.
