SARASOTA, Fla. • Cardinals manager Mike Matheny asked newcomer Yairo Munoz early in camp to rank the positions he felt he played best. Munoz ranked shortstop first, and in a surprise said center field second.
That checked with what Matheny heard from his advanced scout, son Tate, who has played against Munoz in the minors.
“The reports I got even from my own kid is this guy is a really good center fielder,” Matheny said. “Someone says he’s a shortstop. No, he’s a really good center fielder. If you can play short, you can play anywhere in the infield.
