After a 30-second standing ovation, recently minted catcher Yadier Molina, signed to a three-year extension earlier in the day, singled hard past Chicago Cubs starter Jon Lester to start a potential second-inning rally Sunday night at Busch Stadium. Molina had anticipated the outpouring of support.
“It’s going to be a great moment for me and for my family,” he said in the afternoon. “We’ve got the best fans in baseball. I’ve got no doubt in my mind that it’s going to be a great moment for me.”
Molina had tipped his batting helmet to the crowd before stepping into the batter’s box.
