Molina comes back but Wieters goes on IL with toe injury

Nine-time All-Star and Gold Glover Yadier Molina, one of the 10 Cardinals’ players victimized by COVID-19, was taken off that injured list Thursday night but the Cardinals still had just two catchers.

Veteran switch hitter Matt Wieters, hitless in 12 at-bats, went on the 10-day injured list with what president of baseball operations John Mozeliak called a broken left big toe.

Wieters, who took a foul tip off his foot in Chicago, has gone home to Atlanta, leaving Andrew Knizner as the Cardinals’ only other catcher.

“There’s not a lot you can do with a broken toe,” said Mozeliak.
