During an argument that nearly became a fracas in the second inning, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo rushed from the dugout to protect one of his players, and in the process of arguing balls and strikes he was ejected by Timmons. Lovullo continued to argue -- and at some point said something that so irritated Molina that the Cardinals catcher charged at the manager.
Audio from the Arizona broadcast of the game appeared to reveal that Lovullo told Timmons that he could not continue to let Molina turn "balls into strikes." He said that phrase several times. He also seemed to direct a vulgarity at Molina's work behind the plate -- one that could also apply to an individual as well as an adjective.
