It took 18 innings to complete, but the New York Mets toppled the Cardinals 3-1 Sunday at Busch Stadium.
St. Louis' Carlos Martinez, a typical starter who had been called to relieve, stepped onto the mound during his fourth inning of relief in the top of the 18th. He allowed two singles, and then Kevin Plawecki loaded the bases with a sacrifice bunt that resulted in a fielding error by Martinez.
Ruben Tejada then clubbed a deep sacrifice fly to bring home the first run, and Curtis Granderson scored on a sacrifice squeeze.
The Cardinals couldn't retaliate in the bottom of the 18th.
