After Matt Carpenter's home run gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the first, the Mets tied the game 1-1 in the second on two doubles off Carlos Martinez.
Jay Bruce led off the inning with a bloop double to shallow left that shortstop Greg Garcia almost caught. Bruce came out of the game with an injury -- it's the second straight game the Mets have lost a starter in an early inning -- and after James Loney flew out to left, Asdrubal Cabrera doubled to the wall in right center, easily scoring pinch runner Alejandro De Aza.
