The Cardinals made that 3-3 tie disappear quickly.
Jaime Garcia, struggling through two innings, gave up two runs in the top of the second as the Mets took a 5-3 lead.
After striking out Justin Ruggiano to start the inning, Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud singled to left. Pitcher Robert Gsellman, in his first big-league at-bat (see below), sacrificed d'Arnaud to second and then things went bad. Jose Reyes singled to left, just under the glove of shortstop Jedd Gyorko, and d'Arnaud came around to score. Asdrubal Cabrera doubled to the wall in right center to score Reyes and make it 5-3.
