An unofficial rivalry week continues in major league baseball in the coming days. Two of the fiercest rivalries in the sport will be on display: the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers face off on Sunday, and the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals begin a series Monday.
Each scheduled starting pitcher is new to his team’s side of the rivalry, which in each case began in the 19th century. Elias Sports Bureau research shows that the first Giants-Dodgers game was May 3, 1890, and the first Cubs-Cardinals meeting was April 12, 1892.
