Post-Dispatch baseball writer Rick Hummel is honored by the Cardinals for 50 years at the newspaper during a break in Tuesday's game.

Rick Hummel never aspired as a kid growing up in Quincy, Ill., to be a baseball writer. He wasn't even pursuing that career after graduating from the University of Missouri's esteemed journalism school.
