Cardinals slugger Matt Holliday will start at first base Sunday in St. Louis' season opener against the Pirates, marking the first time he has played the position in his 13-year career in the majors.
Holliday, 36, had exclusively played left field and balked at the idea of playing first base in previous seasons.
But the seven-time All-Star saw extended playing time at first base in spring training, and Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has hinted that the right-handed Holliday could be St. Louis' regular first baseman against left-handed pitching.
Holliday is batting third in the lineup Sunday against Pirates left-hander Francisco Liriano.
