JUPITER, Fla. • Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has applauded his team’s 10-4-1 start this spring but he may not be enjoying this game quite as much, having been sent to his home here when he wasn't feeling well Saturday morning. Bench coach David Bell will handle the team against the Atlanta Braves.
General manager John Mozeliak said he hoped Matheny would return on Sunday. “We’ll see how he feels,” Mozeliak said. “But we don’t want him getting anybody else sick either.”
Matt Carpenter has returned to first base _ hitting ninth again _ in the Cardinals’ lineup Saturday as he continues to heal from lower back tightness.
