SEATTLE • At the ballpark sometime Saturday, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny met with closer Trevor Rosenthal about his recent troubles in the ninth inning and let him know that the Cardinals are giving him a different role.
They will not be replacing him with another reliever in the ninth.
The Cardinals intend to go with a three-headed approach to closing games, leading on Seung Hwan Oh, Kevin Siegrist, and Jonathan Broxton. The decision will be based on availability and matchup, Matheny said. Asked if they didn't give Rosenthal's role to one person out of respect for Rosenthal and the promise that he would return to the job, Matheny said that wasn't the case.
