PHILADELPHIA • By taking the brunt of the collision with his shoulder, first baseman Jose Martinez may have dodged damaging his wrist. Now he waits to see how the shoulder recovers.
In the seventh inning of Wednesday’s loss to the Phillies, Matt Carpenter’s throw from third base brought Martinez up the first-base line and into the path of runner Nick Williams. Martinez made the tag for the final out, but his wrist was bent back awkwardly when it connected with Williams’ left shoulder. Martinez recoiled, injuring his shoulder. He was able to remain in the game and singled in his next at-bat, but he acknowledged soreness and stiffness could interrupt his availability for Thursday’s game in Milwaukee.
