DENVER • A day after another sudden injury continued strip-mining the Cardinals’ roster of essential personnel, third baseman Matt Carpenter considered a lineup without Matt Holliday during a time when the club was already panning for precious runs. He said ruminating on the offense missed the point.
The lineup has had a supporting role all season.
From the start, pitching has taken the lead.
“Our pitching is so good that if we can find a way to play defense and score some runs for it, then we should be fine,” he said. “That’s the truth. There’s no question that we’re one of the best teams in baseball and that’s because we have one of the best pitching staffs in baseball.
