Carlos Martinez, in quest of his first shutout and complete game of his big-league career Saturday night, allowed just two hits and no runs in nine innings against the San Francisco Giants. But he got neither the shutout nor the complete game.
Jeff Samardzija and relievers also shut out the Cardinals for nine innings and the game proceeded scoreless to the 10th at Busch Stadium, with Martinez no longer in the game.
With Martinez looking on from the top step of the dugout in the Cardinals’ ninth, leadoff man Matt Carpenter ripped a double off the left-center-field wall.
