PITTSBURGH • For the first time in their history, the Cardinals will have three pitchers on the National League All-Star squad.
Carlos Martinez on Friday became the third Cardinals pitcher named to the National League squad for the All-Star Game in Cincinnati next Tuesday. Martinez, 10-3 with a 2.52 earned run average, won out in an Internet vote over four other players for the 34th and final spot on the National League team.
He will join previously selected reliever Trevor Rosenthal and starter Michael Wacha. The 1943 Cardinals had three pitchers elected to the team but only two, Mort Cooper and Max Lanier, were on hand for the game.
