MIAMI • The game already as tight as his right shoulder was about to be, Carlos Martinez jockeyed for a view of the field as Mark Reynolds came to the plate with the bases loaded and a win there for the taking.
Earlier in the seventh inning, Martinez had been hit in the shoulder by a 94 mph fastball, and the area was starting to bruise. He tried to avoid the team’s trainer, he assured his manager he was OK, and all he wanted to do was see if Reynolds could make it worthwhile. A coach thought about telling him to go sit down, rest, but the young righthander is too animated for that, and so he tried to peek over manager Mike Matheny’s shoulder or around bench coach David Bell.
