JUPITER, Fla. • Notified early Friday morning that starter Carlos Martinez needed to skip his scheduled start that day for an undisclosed personal concern, the Cardinals scrambled a group of minor-leaguers so their leading pitcher could at least simulate a game before leaving.
Shortly before Martinez left the clubhouse for his back-field appearance and less than two hours from first pitch at Roger Dean Stadium, Bud Norris learned he would get a surprise spot start against Boston.
Call it a dress rehearsal.
This could be his role.
Martinez’s sudden departure left the Cardinals an unplanned opportunity to use Norris as a starter, a position they’re preparing him for in case they need an alternative or sub for a member of the rotation.
