Cardinals righthander Carlos Martinez, acting as if was destined to pitch his first complete game and shutout in the major leagues, allowed just one San Francisco Giants hit through six innings Saturday night at Busch Stadium, throwing only 58 pitches.
Joe Panik was the only Giant to reach base, singling cleanly into right field with one out in the fourth.
The problem for Martinez was that the Cardinals hadn’t scored off San Francisco starter Jeff Samardzija though five innings.
