MIAMI •Talk about suicide.
The Miami Marlins had runners at second and third and one out in the fifth inning, trailing the Cardinals 1-0 Tuesday night. The No. 8 hitter, pitcher Dan Straily, batting .016 for his career as manager Don Mattingly (already ejected) tried to do something different with his lineup, was at the plate.
Adam Wainwright ran the count to 3-2 before Derek Dietrich took off for home on the suicide squeeze, as called by interim manager Tim Wallach. Straily, who had had one hit in 63 at-bats in his career with 46 strikeouts, stuck his bat out in bunting positon, and, knowing Wainwright would throw a strike, made contact.
