LOS ANGELES • Reliever Seth Maness’ trip to Class AAA Memphis took a detour Saturday, rerouted through a doctor’s office and ultimately to the disabled list.
Instead of optioning Maness to the minors, as the Cardinals announced Friday, they placed the righthander on the 15-day DL with inflammation in his right elbow. The move means Maness remains on the major league roster, and when he’s cleared to begin throwing again he can do so on a rehab assignment.
Maness has struggled all season with his sinker, and one of the elements of concern was a drop in velocity.
