Cardinals manager Mike Matheny will have three new coaches this year and while all of them will have major roles in trying to bring the club back to postseason relevance after a two-season dry spell, Matheny thinks new pitching coach Mike Maddux also can have an effect on the postseason awards.
“He brings a lot of credibility,” said Matheny. “Look at that staff he had last year (in Washington).”
St. Louisan Max Scherzer won his second straight National League Cy Young Award for the Nationals and Stephen Strasburg was a strong contender.
“We have a very impressive young group of starting pitchers and now you have a voice, someone’s who worked with some of the better starters in the league.
