One hundred regular-season victories, marking the best record in the major leagues, did not net the Cardinals much this fall.
They were dispatched in four games by the Chicago Cubs in the divisional round of the playoffs. They will not win, or even contend for, any of the major player awards, such as Most Valuable Player, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year.
And on Tuesday, their manager, Mike Matheny, who has won three straight division titles and directed all four of his clubs into the playoffs, again did not win the National League Manager of the Year award in balloting conducted by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
