MIAMI • The Cardinals gave lefthanded reliever Brett Cecil $30.5 million for four years this off-season to retire lefthanded hitters nad some righthanders, too.
But, facing three straight Miami lefthanded batsmen in the sixth inning of a 1-1 game Tuesday, Cecil retired only one, and that out became a sacrifice fly anyway as the Marlins rolled up four runs in the inning, three charged to starter Adam Wainwright, to take a 5-1 lead.
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny pulled Wainwright, who had been pitching well but was at 97 pitches, after ordering dangerous Giancarlo Stanton walked intentionally, loading the bases with one out.
