Leake earns first win with Cardinals, lineup delivers four homers

ANAHEIM, Calif. • After his first win in seven tries for his new team, Cardinals pitcher Mike Leake described two essential elements of his success Tuesday, or any other day he starts.

“Make good pitches,” he said, “and get bad contact.”

He doubled that list to include what he also received at Angels Stadium.

As a tailwind for his eight strong innings, Leake received superb defense and overwhelming offense as the Cardinals continued to feast on downtrodden teams, this time branching out to chomp on an injury-riddled American League club. Matt Carpenter established the tone for the Cardinals’ 8-1 victory against the Los Angeles Angels with a leadoff home run, and he added a second home run later for his third career multi-homer game.
