The designated hitter, an American League concept largely foreign to St. Louis fans but which probably will be seen this summer and fall, has been employed here on just one previous occasion, the 1982 World Series.
In those days, the DH was employed in alternate years for the World Series rather than in alternate cities, And Cardinals reserve Dane Iorg, who never had been a DH in his life, was one of the stars of the Series for the Cardinals, going nine for 17 as the DH as the Cardinals outlasted the Milwaukee Brewers in seven games.
Iorg turned 70 a couple of weeks ago — “I can’t believe it,” he said at his home in Highland, Utah, 30 miles from Salt Lake City.
