CHICAGO • As the Cardinals race headlong eagerly away from this season’s first half and into uncharted territory, looking for a new route to an old haunt, at least the starting point will be familiar.
Less than a week removed from the firing of manager Mike Matheny, the Cardinals go straight from the All-Star break into the furnace of a five-game series at Wrigley Field. The organization finds itself perched where it hasn’t been in more than a generation and never under the current ownership. The Cardinals are welcoming a new manager in midseason and considering being a seller at the upcoming trade deadline.
