The prospective manager of the Chicago White Sox stopped by Dave Duncan’s home in Tucson, Arizona, last week to gauge Duncan’s interest in the prospective pitching coach’s job with the White Sox, fully well knowing what the prospective answer would be.
“I have no desire to do that,” said the 75-year-old Duncan by telephone on Tuesday. “He asked me anyway but he knew I wouldn’t do it,” said Duncan, laughing.
Duncan, who was Tony La Russa’s pitching coach for 16 seasons here and with Oakland and the White Sox before that, dating all the way to 1983 when the White Sox won the American League Western Division title, says the interest by owner Jerry Reinsdorf in the 76-year-old La Russa about the manager’s job is legitimate.
