For only the second time in their history Sunday, the Cardinals were eliminated from postseason consideration while playing on the final day of the season.
On Oct. 2, 1949, the Brooklyn Dodgers eliminated the Cardinals on the final day of the season, scoring twice in the 10th inning at Philadelphia to beat the Phillies while the Cardinals were winning in Chicago. The Dodgers beat out the Cardinals by one game at 97-57 to 96-58 and won the National League pennant.
In 1973 and 1974, the Cardinals were ousted on the last day of the season but they were not playing.
