JUPITER, Fla. • Matt Holliday’s initial try at first base passed almost without incident Monday.
Holliday, who originally was in the Cardinals' lineup as a designated hitter for his first spring training appearance against the New York Mets, was switched to first base a few minutes before game time. He had only one fielding chance in four innings, on a throw from third baseman Patrick Wisdom, and he bounced into a forceout and flied out in his two at-bats before exiting the game.
Holliday never has started a big-league regular-season game at any other position but left field.
