Red Schoendienst lived in St. Louis and epitomized St. Louis’ Cardinals, but Germantown was home. He was born here in 1923, famously hitchhiked from here in 1942 and was and forever is this town’s greatest son, though Germantown isn’t even a town — it’s classified as a village, home today to about 1,300 mourners.
