Stephen Piscotty has been filling in swimmingly since the first time it was documented, back when he pitched “four strong innings in relief” according to the Valley Times, a localized edition of California’s Contra Costa Times. He was 10. His Yankees beat the A’s 3-2 in the Livermore American Little League.
Fourteen years later, he’s still at it, this calming presence of an outfielder playing infield. It might look wrong, but it’s so right: Stephen Piscotty, Cardinals first baseman. Not of the future. But of the fall.
When the playoffs begin, Piscotty should start at first. Excuse the double negative, but he can’t not be in the lineup.
