A Cardinal threw a no-hitter in 10 of them.
Only three of the no-hitter pitchers still are alive.
Ray Washburn. Jose Jimenez. Bud Smith.
The Post-Dispatch caught up with them to relive their historic outings.
“It showed me — all the work and dedication I put in was worth it,” Smith said of his magical outing.
Or, as Jimenez explained it: “Something was marked in my life. That’s why I say it was a miracle.”
The likelihood for a no-hitter is low to begin with, even when, say, Bob Gibson took the mound (the late, great Gibby threw one no-no in his 482 starts).
