Hochman: No. 50 turns 40 and pitches like he's 30 — a look at Adam Wainwright's resilience with the Cardinals

The old pitcher remembers the old pitcher.

“He was 40 my rookie season,” Adam Wainwright said.

Except that during 2005 for St. Louis, Cal Eldred was only 37.

“No, he was 40, wasn’t he?” Wainwright said. “Well, he had lots of gray hairs.”

On Monday, Wainwright turned 40. He’s now three years older that the guy he thought was 40.

The fact that Wainwright is still in the big leagues — even if he was just hanging on and hanging curveballs — is an achievement. Consider that in all of his years, the Cardinals have only had four players in their 40s.
