Heartstrings, as we all know, are tugged. But Pat Bradley’s were yanked, painfully stretched as the vehicle drove away with him in the backseat, while he peered out the window at the despaired people he was leaving.

It was 2000. South Sudan. Bradley, a St. Louisan, was on a fact-finding trip to see the persecution.

“We came upon a group of about 70 men, women and children — they were survivors of an attack on their village the night before,” Bradley said. “And they were miles from food, water and shelter. And we had nothing (to give them).
