Work-ethic was instilled in him by his beloved stepfather, Charles Jones, who was nicknamed “the mayor of Carondolet.” In ‘64, Selong’s first season at Busch, his favorite baseball team won the World Series — not a bad rookie year. His favorite players included Lou Brock, Julian Javier and Bob Gibson, though he said of the great pitcher, “Sometimes we would get kind of mad, because he’d take our money! He pitched and the game would be over in one hour and 59 minutes! He pitched too fast.”
Before a recent game at Busch, he stood outside of Section 134 in his bright neon yellow shirt, black shorts, white socks and black safety shoes, made by Emeril Lagasse’s brand of footwear for restaurant workers.
