JUPITER, Fla. • Twenty springs ago, Claude Brochu moved into a new office.
It had a view.
From his balcony overlooking left field, he could watch baseball played upon the glorious green of Roger Dean Stadium, the new spring home to his Montreal Expos and the St. Louis Cardinals. Brochu, the Expos president, joked to a Montreal reporter that perhaps he’d bring a glove to the games. After all, the Cards had Mark McGwire.
“I don’t know why anybody writes those things,” McGwire huffed to the Post-Dispatch’s Rick Hummel, the slugger unamused by what actually was a compliment from Brochu.
