Two hard-throwing righthanded pitchers designated for assignment last week by the Cardinals went their different ways.
Conner Greene, 23, acquired last offseason from Toronto, was claimed on waivers by Kansas City — which recently added former Cardinals manager Mike Matheny to its front-office staff.
Derian Gonzalez, also 23, passed through waivers and was outrighted to Class AAA Memphis, where he finished the 2018 season in that team’s bullpen.
Gonzalez is eligible to be taken in the draft at the upcoming winter meetings in Las Vegas. But that doesn’t seem likely since he spent so little time in Class AAA this past season and would have to be taken in the major-league portion of the draft, meaning he would have to stay in the majors the whole season.
