Hall of Fame baseball writer Rick Hummel takes Cardinals questions in our weekly chat

  • Baseball history question:
In reading a Cardinals history book I noticed that players from past generations compiled a lot more triples than those of today.
Number of times an MLB player totaled 15 or more triples in a season by decade starting with the 1920's: 90/51/22/6/2/9/12/3/10/5.

Even a slow-footed slugger like Johnny Mize hit 13 or more triples three times in his six years with the Cardinals while Willie McGee and Ray Lankford did it only once and Vince Coleman not at all.

So do you have an explanation for this evolution?
