PHOENIX • An intentional walk ordered by Arizona manager Torey Lovullo to the Cardinals’ Matt Carpenter backfired in the seventh inning Thursday when Randal Grichuk deposited a 1-2 slider from Rubby De La Rossa for a three-run homer to left that vaulted the Cardinals ahead 5-3.
Young Luke Voit, a presence since he was brought up last Sunday, pinch hit a double with two out to start the rally and Carpenter was waved to first before Grichuk, who came up with Voit, crashed his third homer since returning from his minor league exile.
Cardinals starter Lance Lynn, who has had trouble matching up innings pitched with pitches thrown, needed only 87 pitches to make six innings, marking the first time he had gone that far in six starts.
