A teaching moment arose Wednesday night when Pittsburgh Pirates star Andrew McCutchen ripped a sinking line drive toward Cardinals center fielder Randal Grichuk.
This should have been, at worst, a routine single to center. But Grichuk got a poor break on the ball. He lost his footing. He went for a diving catch and missed, allowing the ball to roll well beyond him as McCutchen raced to third base.
“It’s part of being a young player,” manager Mike Matheny said. “He is going to continue to work on it and he has the athleticism to make this work.
