Starting pitcher Michael Wacha stood up for his teammates Thursday afternoon in Cincinnati.
He eased the Cardinals through their pitching crunch, leaving just six outs for relievers Jonathan Broxton, Randy Choate and Trevor Rosenthal. Since the bullpen shouldered a punishing eight-inning load the night before, Wacha’s seven-inning endurance was essential.
Not only did the Cardinals beat the Reds 3-0, Seth Maness actually got a day off. Who knew that was possible?
But soon manager Mike Matheny won’t have to fret about such pitching dilemmas. Once again the September roster expansion will give him a big edge for the final month.
