Fans are getting a look at how Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol could direct his upgraded pitching staff in postseason play.
He pushes hard to find edges. He pulls his starters when he sees major trouble brewing. He sends reliever after reliever to the mound to gain more favorable matchups.
The Cardinals don’t feature much swing-and-miss stuff in their rotation. Maybe Jack Flaherty will add some — he struck out 34 batters in 27 minor league innings this season — but this pitching staff will need group efforts to make a deep playoff run.
Fortunately, the Cardinals are building a bullpen that can meet that collective challenge.
